We are excited to imagine the World Zionist Village as a designed preserve for native pollinators and a new center for the study of climate change resilience and sustainable agriculture highlighting the Negev’s ecological richness. Drawing on the Zionist vision of refuge, the Pollinators Estate becomes a preserve of biodiversity for a fundamental resource in our ecosystem: native pollinators. The ecological service that native pollinators provide is necessary for the reproduction of over 85% of the world’s flowering plants, including more than two-thirds of the world’s crop species. Pollinators are keystone species in most terrestrial ecosystems yet are today threatened by global habitat loss and facing alarming extinction rates, which in turn would have severe consequences for global food supply and ecosystem survival. Preservation, cultivation and education are intertwined missions for our project for the World Zionist Village: its support of biodiversity is both a political and ecological exemplar.
